Divers recover body of drowned 10-year-old

EASTERN CAPE – An inquest docket has been opened and is currently under investigation following the drowning of a 10-year-old boy at Peddie outside King William’s Town.

On 09 March 2020, Eastern Cape SAPS divers received a complaint about a drowning incident that occurred in Peddie area on 08 March 2020. Members attached to East London Dive Point were immediately mobilized, and they rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival at the scene, at Cruston Dam-Celetyuma area in Peddie, they were shown by eyewitnesses the area where the drowning occurred. They immediately began searching.

After approximately 20 minutes of searching, the divers recovered the body of a 10-year-old male who was identified as Lithemba Platana.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga warned the public to be careful as the torrents in streams and rivers have become frequent after the recent heavy rains. “The water levels at our dams and rivers have increased. This poses a threat to children, livestock and people,” she warned further.
