Four illegal miners apprehended during a joint sting operation

POLOKWANE – The SAPS Organised Crime Unit in Limpopo continues to win the fight against illegal mining across the Province, especially in the Burgersfort Cluster.

The Unit has on, Thursday, 19 March 2020, intercepted and nabbed four suspects aged between 28 and 68, for illegal mining and for possession of illegally mined minerals (Chrome) during a sting joint operation conducted in the Mecklenburg policing area outside Burgersfort.

The Police team embarked on a disruptive operation at ga-Makgoba village next to Twickenham Mine when the four suspects were spotted driving in two motor vehicles. They were stopped, searched and Police found buckets full of chrome.

During the arrest, the two motor vehicles were also confiscated.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended the Provincial team for dealing with any form of illegal mining head-on in the Province.

The suspects will appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court soon. Police investigations are still ongoing.
