Does Motor Oil Expire?

You decided to declutter your garage during this lockdown period and came across an old bottle of motor oil….Now you are thinking to yourself…

• Can it still be used?
• Did it expire?
• What will happen if I use expired oil?

Well, the answer is, Yes, motor oil does have a shelf life. Engine Oil’s shelf life can be between Two to Five years, but engine oil properties are best when used within two years.

The oil is still usable if sealed and stored in a cool dry location and not yet reached the expiration date.

How does motor oil expire?

• Thermal Breakdown caused by extreme temperatures.
• Oxidation (Already Opened)
• Contamination (Already opened)

Can you use expired motor oil?

If you have old bottles with no visible expiration date, it is recommended to dispose of it. Using motor oil which has expired can cause serious damage to your engine.

What should I do with old motor oil?

Motor oil should be recycled and not thrown in the dustbin, many Auto-shops accept and safely dispose of oil motor oil.

TIP: When purchasing motor oil, write the date of purchase with a permanent marker on the bottle.
