Two arrested in Johannesburg for running a factory that is a non-essential service during the lockdown and for attempting to bribe a police officer

A joint operation by the Directorate Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), the SAPS and the Department of Labour on Monday, 06 April 2020 in Benrose, Johannesburg, led to the arrest of two suspects aged 33 and 42 who were charged for contravention of Section 11B (1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2020; contravention of Section 8 of the Health and Safety Act, 1993; and for attempting to bribe a police officer.

The team pounced on a factory manufacturing cleaning equipment and plastic-ware in Benrose, Johannesburg and the suspects failed to provide the business’s permit to operate as an essential service during the lockdown, and instead attempted to bribe police officers.
