National Lockdown Travel Tips

Lockdown has everyone finding themselves in very dynamic situations, however restrictions are changing from time to time.  Let’s look at what type of travelling is permitted under Lockdown level 3.

South Africa moves to Level 3 on 1 June1

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and  Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel,  are part of the National Coronavirus Command Council.  They have recently briefed the media regarding Level 3 restrictions.

What about travelling to other provinces?2

From 1 June 2020 it will be a little less challenging to travel to another district or province. Restrictions regarding crossing domestic borders have been eased, but all national border posts remain closed.

Some reasons why you can travel to other provinces2

Below are some reasons that will allow you to travel between provinces.

For work2

You can travel between provinces for professional reasons provided you have managed to obtain a permit.

Relocating to another house2

Anyone who needs to move to another home may do so under the Level 3 restrictions. A permit is required3.

Caring for loved ones2

Anyone who needs to cross the provincial borders to care for a immediate family member may do so.

Back to school2

Learners who need to move to and from schools once they are open will have freedom of movement.

Attending funerals2

Those required to attend a funeral may cross any provincial border.

Transport of mortal remains for burial2

Travel is permitted for burial in another province, provided that medical guidelines are strictly adhered to at all times.

Requiring medical treatment in another province2

Those needing medical treatment must go to their nearest hospital. They may do so if it happens to be across another provincial border.

Departing from quarantine2

If anyone was separated from home due to being quarantined in another province, there is no restriction to travelling home.

Children that need to travel2

Children who share parents living in different areas may now travel to any province so that they can be cared for as needed.

Travel to other countries2

Travel to other countries for leisure is strictly forbidden.

Beware of increased volume of commuter traffic2

Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Transport, announced that traffic across provincial borders would increase considerably from 1 June. So, under level 3, people returning to work as well as learners and students going back to institutions of learning would be allowed to embark on long-distance travel between provinces. Public transport vehicles are only allowed to transport those who are allowed to travel between provinces.

Using the risk-adjusted approach2

Fikile Mbalula mentioned that a risk-adjusted cautious approach is being applied to all movement.

Compared to what it was during levels 5 and 4, traffic will increase quite considerably. The more traffic there is on the roads, and the more frequently you travel to and from work, the higher the risk of an accident. It is for this very reason that you need to ensure your car has insurance cover. Why don’t you contact PMD for more information on their affordable car insurance?
