Robbery suspect arrested in Verulam

A 23-year-old Zimbabwean national who was one of five gang members being sought by law enforcement was arrested following a robbery in the Verulam CBD this morning.

The gang have been on a rampage in recent months targeting elderly men and woman. They would approach the unsuspecting victims in the Central Business District and rob them at knifepoint before fleeing. In some cases, the victims were stabbed even after handing over their valuables.

This morning (Saturday) at approximately 08:42 members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were on patrol on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD when they noticed a robbery in progress where an elderly male was being robbed of his valuables.

The suspects split up and fled in different directions when they noticed Reaction Officers approaching. Additional backup converged on possible escape routes and one of the suspects was nabbed while fleeing on Old Main Road in the vicinity of the steel bridge.

The suspect informed RUSA Officers that his brother was wealthy and would pay a handsome bribe for his release. Reaction Officers rejected the offer and handed the suspect over to the Verulam SAPS.

Victims who have been robbed by the gang are urged to register criminal cases at the Verulam SAPS.
