Two firearms seized in Amangwe, two men in custody

DURBAN– The operation conducted by the Newcastle Public Order Police in the early hours of 10 June 2020 reaped good results with the arrest of two suspects with firearms.

The team deployed in the Amangwe area to curb the killing of people in the area are working tirelessly to arrest all those in possession of illegal firearms. They went to two homesteads at Nyezane area searching for the suspects in possession of unlicensed firearms. They went to a house where they arrested a 33-year-old suspect who was found in possession of an AK47 with 13 rounds of ammunition. The firearm was found hidden under the mattress. The suspect was then placed under arrest.

They proceeded to another house where a 29-year-old suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition. They will be profiled to check if they are linked to the recent cases committed in Amangwe and surrounding areas. The firearm was found hidden under the pillow. Both suspects appeared yesterday in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court. They were remanded in custody until 15 June 2020.

“I am pleased with the number of firearms seized in the Amangwe area. We are hoping the investigative team will gather all the evidence that will lead to the successful prosecution of the suspects,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
