Anti-Gang Unit arrest suspect in possession of an illegal firearm

Active participation between communities and law enforcement is essential in the fight against crime especially when the communities are aware of criminal and illegal activities taking place within their neighbourhoods.

On Tuesday, 28 July 2020 at about 11:45, members of the Anti-Gang Unit immediately operationalised information received of an illegal firearm in the possession of a suspect. The members held waylay duties and waited for the white Hyundai bakkie in Tyhinira Street in Motherwell. The driver was delivering bread and as when he was in Sisulu Street, the vehicle was stopped. On searching the vehicle a 9mm Norinco was recovered with 16 rounds of ammunition. The firearm was reported stolen in East London in February 2020.

The 28-year-old driver was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. His vehicle was also confiscated. He is expected to appear in court soon.
