Nine suspects nabbed for house robberies and illegal possession of firearms

POTCHEFSTROOM – The fight against trio crimes in the province gained success when nine suspects were apprehended on Sunday, 12 July 2020 in Matshepe village outside Mahikeng in the policing area of Lomanyaneng.

According to reports, the suspects aged between 33 and 46, were arrested after Lomanyaneng Visible Policing and Mahikeng Flying Squad members swiftly reacted to a tip-off. During the arrest, one of the suspects was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Upon searching the place, police found five other firearms. Furthermore, stolen goods such as cellphones, food, and a grinder were also recovered and successfully linked with three house robberies which the suspects allegedly committed in Gamothakga village on Saturday, 11 July 2020.

Preliminary investigation revealed that three of the firearms were reported stolen between 2003 and 2008 in Elsburg, Randfontein, and Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng Province. It was further established that the serial numbers of the other two firearms were filed-off.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Molopo Magistrates’ Court in Mmabatho today, 14 July 2020 for house robberies and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended the police for their swift reaction which led to the arrest and confiscation of the firearms. He also thanked the community for their cooperation which ensured that the suspects are brought to book.
