WESTERN CAPE – Efforts by the police to eradicate drug trafficking through strategic deployment along with entry points into the Western Cape Province yielded positive results when drugs with an estimated street value of R1.8 million were confiscated along the N1 near Laingsburg in the early hours this morning, 03 August 2020.
Vigilant members attached to the Laingsburg police conducted random searches during a vehicle checkpoint when they stopped a taxi with eight (8) occupants at about 02:05 whilst they were traveling towards Cape Town from the Eastern Cape. Upon searching the trailer of the vehicle they found that the trailer was fully stashed with dagga that was concealed in plastic bags, weighing about 900kg with an estimated value of about R1.8million. The police members confiscated the drugs and arrested the driver as well as his co-driver on charges of Dealing in Drugs.
Both suspects aged 35 and 45-years are still in custody and are scheduled to appear in the Laingsburg Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, 04 August 2020, once being charged.
It is believed that the consignment drugs were destined for distribution in Cape Town.
Western Cape police management commended the members involved with the find and subsequent arrests. These arrests will send a very strong message to would-be drug pedlars to refrain from their illegal activities as they will find themselves on the wrong side of the Law. Members remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding our communities from the scourge of drugs and will continue to eradicate the transportation and distribution of these illegal drugs in and to our communities.
