POP and TRT operations brings in three suspects, five firearms and ammunition

KING WILLIAMS TOWN – Public Order Police members deployed at Lusikisiki and Mzamba, under the command of Capt Mduduma, conducted an intelligence-driven operation executing search warrants in search of illegal weapons at Monti A/A Maswazini location in Bizana on 20 August 2020 at 22:00 until 05:00.

A 67-year-old suspect from Monti location after he was found in possession of unlicensed firearm Norinco star with 12 live rounds of ammunition and one magazine.

A 36-year-old was arrested after being found with an illegal Taurus revolver with 5 live rounds of ammunition.

Both suspects are expected to appear at Bizana Magistrates court facing a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition. Three other targets were visited but without a positive outcome.

Tactical Response Team deployed at Lusikisiki followed up information from Crime Intelligence about the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in Mthontsana polling area on 21 August 2020 from 18:30 till 03:30 the next morning.

An operation was conducted at Upper Hlabathi, Enkhulu A/A resulting in the arrest of a 60-year-old male suspect for possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition.

He was in possession of:
• One Homemade shotgun,
• A Norinco 9mm pistol with one magazine and 7 rounds,
• Norinco 9mm pistol with one magazine and 5 rounds,
• 26 rounds (7.65) ammunition,
• 31 loose rounds (9mm) as well as
• 32 Shotgun rounds.

The suspect will appear at Mthontsasa periodical magistrates court on Monday, 24 August 2020.

All firearms will be taken to ballistic tests to ascertain their early use in the commitment of a crime.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the outcome. Our objective of thwarting the proliferation of illegal weapons in this province is slowly getting realised. Each firearm and suspect taken from the street is a welcome result. “The firearms amnesty period is open until early January next year. Make use of this opportunity and bring your illegal weapons without the threat of being prosecuted,” she encouraged.
