KWAZULU-NATAL – Hawks members from Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime unit working together with Pongola SAPS detectives arrested a 41-year-old male for illegal dealing in raw gold material at Ntumbane area in Pongola.
Members received information about a suspect that was allegedly in possession of raw gold material which he was reportedly preparing to smuggle to Gauteng. A joint operation was swiftly conducted and the suspect was arrested and charged. The value of the seized raw gold is estimated to be worth R500 000.00
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the seized raw gold material was extracted from Klipwal Gold Mine in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal. The suspect has further been charged for corruption after he offered the investigators money to set him free. He is expected to appear in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
