Police confiscates drugs worth R700 000 at roadblock near Pletttenberg Bay

WESTERN CAPE – Concerted efforts to eradicate drug trafficking on major entry points into the Western Cape led to the confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of R700 000-00 on Sunday, 06 September 2020 on the N2 highway near Plettenberg Bay.

Vigilant members of the police conducted a roadblock at the Tsitsikamma Tollgate at about 22:00 when they stopped a passenger bus that was en-route to Cape Town. Upon searching the luggage compartment of the bus they discovered a grey bag with Mandrax tablets inside. Further investigation led the police to the owner of the luggage that was a passenger on the bus. The police confiscated 13 500 Mandrax tablets and arrested a 31-year-old woman on charges of possession of drugs.

She is still in custody and will appear in Court when charged.

In unrelated incident police also confiscated 155 bundles of Khat with an estimated street value of R15 000-00 following a search of a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi that was en-route to George. This vehicle was stopped and the members found a box behind the driver seat during a search of the vehicle. They discovered the drugs wrapped in newspapers inside the box. No arrest was made in connection with this discovery.

It is believed that the drugs were all destined for George in the Southern Cape.

Western Cape police management commended the members for their vigilance in ensuring that the drugs were taken from the streets. Similar operations to curb drug trafficking will continue and drug traffickers will be brought to book.
