Several arrests made in Nyanga

WESTERN CAPE – Focussed operations and endeavors to ensure criminals are brought to book continuously result in desired outcomes in the Nyanga Cluster Precinct.

An illegal firearm and four imitation firearms were recovered and suspects arrested in Elsies River and Nyanga.

Last night, two suspects were arrested shortly after they robbed a taxi driver and passenger on 35th Avenue in Elsies River. The driver was driving in Halt Street when he stopped to pick up passengers. Three male passengers got into the taxi and when inside the taxi one passenger pulled out a firearm and threatened the driver. The suspects then robbed the driver of cash and a passenger. They then alighted the taxi and ran away.

The victims flagged a police van that was on patrol in the area and informed them of the armed robbery. Police followed up on the matter and one suspect was arrested in possession of a special revolver and the second suspect was arrested hiding in another yard.

Meanwhile, thirty (30) suspects were arrested since Friday in Nyanga.

Three suspects were arrested this morning in possession of two imitation firearms and a dangerous weapon. The members were busy with stops and searches when they arrested the trio in Debeza and Sheffield Road in Browns Farm. Two other imitations were recovered on Thursday and Saturday.

Other suspects were arrested for hijacking, rape and armed robbery, assault with intent to do grievous bodily, attack on police and possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of the stolen property, drugs, counterfeit goods, dangerous weapons and intimidation.

One suspect was arrested on a murder case of Stekspruit in Eastern Cape.

The suspects’ age between 18 and 51 are expected to appear in Athlone, Goodwood and Philippi Magistrate Court next week on the mentioned charges.

The members were applauded for their swift response and vigilance.
