Armed robbery at a Shoprite USave in Tongaat

Ten armed men held up a Shoprite USave Supermarket in Tongaat – KwaZulu-Natal.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to the call after the Operations Center received information if an armed robbery in progress at the supermarket located on the R102 near Maidstone Village.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that ten suspects armed with 9mm pistols held a female security guard at gunpoint at the entrance and forced her into the store. Several suspects forced their way into the manager’s offices while the others held up two more internal security guards & removed cash from the tills and robbed customers of valuables.

The suspects fled when the electricity came on after a general power failure in the area believing that an alarm had been activated.

A witness confirmed that one of the cars used by the suspects was a white Toyota Etios. Details of the other getaway vehicles are not known.

No shots were fired.
