Severe weather alert issued by the SAWS

The City urges residents to exercise caution as the South African Weather Services has issued an alert on extreme weather conditions on 03 October 2020.

An intense cold front associated with an upper cut-off pressure system is expected to affect the Eastern Cape this Friday 03 October 2020.

Discussion: A Cut-off-low associated with a ridging high will move over the Eastern Cape resulting in localized flooding due to rain with heavier showers exceeding 50 mm over the southeastern region of the Eastern Cape on
Saturday.

Impact: Localized flooding of informal settlements or roads, low-lying areas and bridges. There will be difficult driving conditions on dirt roads and minor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads.
There could be short-term disruptions to essential services with blocked drainage systems. There can be a chance localised mudslides and rockfalls.

Instruction: If possible stay indoors and off the roads, avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles. If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In rural areas protect/relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground.

Abandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended before access is cut off by floodwater. Listen to the radio or TV for warnings and obey the instructions from disaster management officers.
