Suspects arrested by the Hawks for dealing and possession of drugs

FREE STATE – Five suspects have been arrested for dealing and possession of drugs, in Naudeville, Welkom on Tuesday, 06 October 2020.

On Monday, 5 October 2020, the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, SANEB and Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics followed up on information regarding a correctional officer allegedly involved in drug dealing. Observation was done by the Hawks and Crime Intelligence at an identified address in Welkom.

The information also revealed that the drugs would be transported from Welkom to an unknown destination on Wednesday, 7 October 2020. The team received a tip-off that there was a change of plans and the drugs were being moved to another address on Tuesday evening. The Hawks counter-narcotics and Flying squad conducted observation duties at the identified address.

At about 21:50, one suspect left the said address. He was stopped and searched by Flying squad and members of the Hawks. An undisclosed amount of cash was seized together with white Audi A3, and four more suspects aged between 22 and 47 of which one is a prison warder at Odendaalsrus Correctional facility were arrested.
Eleven (11) packets containing Mandrax tablets to the value of R1.3 million and an additional seven thousand rand in cash were seized. The suspects are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court, tomorrow, Thursday, 08 October 2020.
