Ekombe murder suspect arrested during shootout with police

It is alleged on 27 December 2020 at 02:30, a taxi with 13 passengers was shot at by unknown suspects whilst traveling at Cacaneni area in Ekombe. Four people aged between 24 and 56 were declared dead at the scene. One passenger was injured while others escaped unharmed. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation by Ekombe SAPS.

Yesterday, the police followed up information regarding the suspects involved, and the suspect’s vehicle was spotted in Kwahhoshi area in Babanango. Upon approaching the suspects, the police were met by a hail of bullets and a shoot-out ensued. During the crossfire, the police managed to arrest a 40-year-old suspect. The suspect was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Police also seized the vehicle used by the suspect. Police are still seeking the other two suspects who managed to flee the scene. The suspect is appearing before the Babanango Magistrates’ Court today on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as murder and attempted murder.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the team for the speedy arrest of the murder suspect. “I am confident that the remaining suspects will be caught soon,” he said.
