Vice chairman attacked at crematorium in Verulam

The Vice-Chairman of the Verulam Crematorium arrived at the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Headquarters seeking medical assistance after was assaulted by mourners during a cremation.

Vish Roopnarain informed Reaction Officers that he arrived at the Crematorium to check that Covid-19 protocols were being followed. He found a Covid-19 funeral in progress and that the rules not being adhered to. Roopnarain then asked mourners to report to the scanning bay to have their temperatures checked and to be sanitized.

The Vice-Chairman added that he was then attacked by two men who punched him repeatedly on his head and face with clenched fists. He was then attacked by the family of the deceased who encouraged the assault to continue. His vehicle, a white Izuzu bakkie was also damaged.

At that stage Roopnarain broke free and fled to the RUSA Headquarters.
