Copper thief nabbed with stolen copper

3 March 2021 – A 23-year-old man is due to appear before the Durban Magistrates Court today on charges of tampering and damaging essential infrastructure.

His arrest follows a multi-disciplinary operation that was conducted yesterday in Clairwood. The team was busy conducting observations at Amanzamnyama Informal Settlement near Jacobs Railway line when they spotted a man that was busy burning copper cables suspected to be Transnet property.

The suspect attempted to flee the scene upon seeing the police. He was pursued by police and nabbed with stolen copper cable. The copper cables were identified as the property of Transnet.

“This arrest proves that police are determined to root-out copper cable theft and deal decisively with those who are destroying essential infrastructure,” said the Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya.
