K9 Unit members arrest five suspects for possession of abalone in Amalinda

Determined to protect the marine living resources, East London K9 Unit members pounced on five suspects and seized illegal abalone on Wednesday, 14 April 2021 during patrols.

Police spotted the suspects near a residence in Edmund Street, Amalinda, and stopped them in their tracks as they were trying to evade arrest. A thorough search was conducted by the police of their vehicles, a Kombi and a VW Polo, which led to the discovery of 781 units of abalone. The abalone weighing 56 kg is estimated at R33 600.

The five suspects aged between 31 and 43 are due to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court today on charges of illegal possession of abalone under the Marine Living Resources Act.
