Police warn those who disregard the law during court appearances that they will be prosecuted

In the view of the unwarranted spate of violent incidents that broke out in Piet Retief recently, during two court appearances recently, police sends a stern warning against lawbreakers. These court appearances, one being a case where two Coka brothers were shot and killed at Pampoen farm in Dirkiesdorp near Piet Retief on 09 April 2021 and a rape case which occurred in 2014, where the accused is alleged to have raped his employee whilst his wife was not at home.

During these court appearances, some members of the public gathered outside the court, displaying unprecedented unruly behaviour where they even attempted to forcefully enter the courthouse and contravened the Lockdown Regulations.

However when police stopped them, they turned their anger towards innocent members of the public, destroying their property in the process, as well as looted several items from the shops. Six suspects aged between 20 and 51, were arrested in this regard for public violence and they have appeared before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court today.
