Athlone SAPS members arrest suspect for possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition

On Friday, 14 May 2021, at about 09:45, information was received from community members that gangsters are running with firearms in Vygieskraal.
Members attached to Athlone Visible Policing followed up the information and arrested a 21-year-old suspect with an unlicensed 9mm pistol of which the serial number and brand name was removed including one extended magazine and 10 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 May 2021, on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter on Thursday, 13 May 2021, at about 21:55, members of Mitchell’s Plain Crime Prevention Unit were busy with crime prevention duties when they received information about drugs being sold from a house in Mayfair Street, Portlands. Upon arrival at the identified premises, one of the suspects ran out of the house however, he was swiftly apprehended in the back yard.

The members searched the suspect and found in his possession, a plastic bag containing 24 mandrax tablets, 105 straws of heroin, seven rounds of ammunition, 50 grams of tik and an undisclosed amount of cash. The 37-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of dealing in drugs and possession of ammunition. He is due to appear in court once charged.

On Wednesday, 12 May 2021, at about 22:10, Mitchell’s Plain SAPS members were busy with crime prevention duties in Mayfair Street, Portlands when they stopped and searched a suspicious male and found 50 straws of heroin, 20 full mandrax, three sachets of tik and six rounds of ammunition in his possession.

The 22-year-old man was arrested on charges of possession of drugs and ammunition and is due to appear in court on Monday, 17 May 2021.
