How to keep your car smelling fresh

There’s nothing worse than getting into a car that has a bad odour, it immediately gives off a bad impression. Remember how amazing the new car smell was? Read on and find out how to make your car smell a lot fresher.

What about the air vents?

Air vents usually provide a bad odour due to dust, dirt and other germs that collect over time. To get into those small recesses, use a small sponge or cotton swabs. Regularly replace the interior air filter if your car has one. Press the air-conditioner overflow tube to eliminate any dirt and other grime.

There are several ways to add fragrance to a car cabin.

Fabric conditioner

The plastic sausage-shaped bags containing fabric conditioner liquid used in washing machines produce a delightful, fresh odour when placed under the front passenger seat. The fragrance lasts a long time.

Try adding the aroma of coffee beans

Most of us should know the amazing aroma of a shop selling coffee beans. Why can’t your car smell like that? Place a handful of coffee beans in a cloth bag or even a sock. Not only do coffee beans deodorize but they also absorb any bad odour lingering in the car. The only disadvantage is that the beans should be changed once a week. Ground coffee can also be used in a container such as a saltshaker bottle.

The fragrance of essential oils

A drop of essential oil on tissue paper or in a diffuser will do a great job in keeping your car smelling fresh. You can also spray the car’s interior with a mixture of water and a few drops of essential oil. The peppermint smell will help any passengers prone to nausea while travelling.

Using an unlit scented candle

An unlit scented candle provides enough fragrance to destroy those lingering, nasty smells. Used scented candles should also  work. Place a candle in an old clean jar with a lid full of holes. When the car gets hot in the sun, the wax will soften and even melt, releasing the lovely aroma into the interior.

What about baking soda?

Amazingly enough, baking soda is also known for its great deodorizing properties. Besides that, it removes any dirt engrained in the upholstery. Sprinkle a little baking soda on the floor, mats, and car seats, and vacuum.

Prevention is always better than cure

Any old coffee cups and hamburger containers, and old chips lying on the floor can all contribute towards a bad smell. Cleaning your car regularly is a must, including car mats and vacuuming the carpet floor thoroughly. Smoking in a car should be an absolute no-go, as smoke penetrates the upholstery fabric causing a persistent smell. Any accidental spills of cold drink or milk should be cleaned up immediately. The longer you wait, the more difficult it can be to remove any nasty smells.

Life is all about maintaining the things we enjoy. Looking after a car’s interior by keeping it clean and adding fragrances to it is no exception.
