Manenberg SAPS members arrest alleged gang affiliate with prohibited firearm and ammunition

Members attached to Manenberg SAPS were commended for their commitment relating to their mandate to combat crime.

At about 04:00 this morning, Manenberg SAPS members were conducting routine patrols in the Manenberg area, when they spotted a known gang member and stopped and searched him. He was found to be in possession of a CZ 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.

The 25-year-old male was arrested on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon on the mentioned charges.

In an unrelated matter on Saturday, 15 May 2021, at about 00:05, members of Western Cape POP arrested a 21-year-old suspect on charges of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and possession of an imitation firearm between the shacks at Old Klipfontein Mission.

According to reports, a VW Polo was hijacked in Delft earlier this month and the vehicle’s tracking system was activated. The signal was picked up by members of POP who then followed the signal to Old Klipfontein Mission Nyanga.

The area was dark and flooded by recent rains which made it difficult for members to drive in and they pursued on foot into the area. The members apprehended a suspect in the driver seat of the vehicle and he was found to be in possession of an imitation firearm presumed to have been used during the commission of the hijacking. The VW Polo was confiscated and the 21-year-old suspect was arrested and he is due to appear in court once charged.
