Alert and dedicated members of the South African Police Service in Uitenhage continued in their efforts to clamp down on those residents who failed to adhere to the Disaster Management Act relating to curfew hours however when they spotted a VW Polo in Caledon Street after curfew time, little did they realise that a large number of drugs were in the vehicle.
On Sunday evening, 6 June 2021 at about 23:50, police were patrolling the area when they noticed a driver of a white VW Polo traveling in Caledon Street. The driver of the vehicle was instructed to pull off the road in order to investigate the reason for him not complying with the Disaster Management Act. Instead, the driver failed to heed the instructions and sped off. Members chased after the vehicle which disregarded several traffic signs. Police succeeded in stopping the vehicle in Spekboom Street, Kamesh. The driver, aged 2-year-old was searched and an amount of 2017 mandrax tablets, weighing about 3,1kg was found in his possession. The estimated street value is R121 010.
The suspect was arrested on charges of reckless and/or negligent driving, possession of drugs, and the contravention of the Disaster Management Act.
He is expected to appear in the Uitenhage magistrate’s court today, Monday, 7 June 2021 on the mentioned charges.
Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso commended the police officers for their alertness and good work which led to the arrest of the suspect and the removal of the drugs off the streets.
