Tshwane Metro Police Department emphasizes its members were not involved in reported assault of a medical doctor

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has noted an online article published on 28 June 2021 by mobserver about a doctor who was assaulted and arrested by traffic officials while rushing to save a patient.

The TMPD would like to emphasise that TMPD members were not involved in the alleged incident. Internal investigations were conducted and it was discovered that TMPD members were not involved.

We would like to alert Tshwane residents and community members that they play an important role in helping to combat and prevent crime, and to ensure safety and security by reporting incidents of police misconduct.

Residents are urged to report any complaints, corruption or bribery involving TMPD members to Internal Affairs on 083 657 2998 or at tmpdcomplaints@tshwane.gov.za.

Residents should note that they can and are encouraged to report incidents of police misconduct to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to ensure that the matter is investigated independently and externally. The IPID then makes appropriate recommendations to the TMPD regarding disciplinary action.

Members of the public can lodge a complaint with the IPID on 012 399 0000 or 0800 111 696 (toll-free) or at complaints@ipid.gov.za. Downloadable complaint forms are available at www.ipid.gov.za.

Members of the public are also reminded that when they are stopped by the TMPD, they must comply with the instructions of the officer as required by the law.

Should there be any misconduct, obtain the officer’s name and surname on his/her shield or badge, and take note of the registration number of the TMPD motor vehicle concerned and/or the fleet number, for example MP621.

TMPD officers are required to have their identification visible at all times.

This will assist in investigations when a complaint is lodged.
