On Thursday 8 July 2021, the Welkom K9 unit followed information from the Provincial Counter Narcotics unit, about an illegal distillery at a farm near Welkom.
On arrival at the farm, two males aged 34, tried to flee but were arrested. They will be charged for the Contravention of the Free State Liquor and Gambling Authority Act. SARS Customs Excise is likely to add other charges as investigation progresses.
The 61-year-old farm owner who rented a farm to the suspects was also arrested after a. 38 special revolver without a license was found in his vehicle and will also be charged on the same charges as with the other two suspects.
The case will be handed to the Hawks for further investigation and the three will appear at Welkom Magistrate Court soon.
