Finding Hope – Living with a Mental Health Issue

Mental health issues, such as Depression, Anxiety, Substance Abuse and job stress are very common, especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic, affecting individuals, their families, co-workers, and the broader community.

Mental illness and the challenges associated with it, also has a direct impact on workplaces through increased absenteeism and overall reduced productivity. Although Mental Disorders can be treated quite effectively, very few South Africans seek treatment for these issues and face stigma and discrimination instead.

Mental health problems are the result of a complex interplay between biological, psychological, social and environmental factors, all of which have been especially stressful in the recent past.

Education is the first step to awareness and in order to help equip many South Africans with knowledge about Mental Health issues, SADAG are hosting a Facebook LIVE chat session, Friday 23 July from 1pm-2pm. During this session we will be joined by Surfacing Author, Marion Scher who spent years speaking to people facing multiple Mental Health issues ranging from Depression, Anxiety and Suicide, and felt compelled to share some of these stories in Surfacing.

Each chapter tells a very different and very personal story – from a successful businessman who attempted suicide three times in one day to new mother whose horrific real experiences didn’t match the Instagram photos of blissful motherhood she had expected. We also chat to Melissa du Preez, who was included in Surfacing as she gives us insight into her own journey with Depression and how she has gone on to live a healthy fulfilled life in spite of all the challenges she faced.
