Taxi driver arrested in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Nyanga

The commitment by police members to keep communities safe led to the arrest of a 38-year-old taxi driver in Nyanga.

Police members were busy conducting a Vehicle Check Point (VCP) in Ntlangano Street in Nyanga this morning at about 06:00. Upon searching a vehicle, a 9 mm pistol with ammunition was found. The occupant was arrested and detained when he could not provide a valid license to be in possession of the mentioned firearm.

Once charged the suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter, during the early morning hours of this morning members attached to Milnerton SAPS were doing patrols in Freedom Way, Joe Slovo, when they saw a VW Polo with two occupants. The members approached the vehicle, stopped and search it, and found nine 9mm rounds in the vehicle.

Both male suspects aged 23 and 29 were arrested. With further interrogation, the suspects informed the members that the owner of the vehicle is in a shack of his girlfriend in Democracy Road. The members followed up on the information, and on their way to the house the two suspects pointed out the owner walking with his girlfriend. They were taken back to the shack, where members searched it. The members found a 9 mm Glock firearm without a serial number.

The magazine with nine rounds was found on the roof of the shack. The 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old female were arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charges.
