Committed officers arrested suspects in possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition

Police officers remain committed to combat crimes that may threaten the safety and security of the community they need to protect.

Members of the Maitland Flying Squad were busy with patrols on Wednesday, 04 August 2021, when they noticed a vehicle that was reported hijacked. As they stopped the vehicle, two unknown males jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene with police members in pursuit. A 36-year-old man was arrested and detained when he was found in possession of a loaded firearm without a license to be in possession of the firearm. Once charged, he is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate court on Friday, 06 August 2021, on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition as well as possession of a hijacked vehicle.

In an unrelated case, Nyanga police members proved that they are committed to protecting the community. Whilst busy with patrols on Wednesday, 04 August 2021 at about 11:40, they received valuable information relating to a person in possession of a firearm walking near Manyana Street in Crossroads. The information was operationalized, and when the suspect noticed the patrol vehicle, he fled. Committed to the task, the police members gave chase. A 24-year-old man was arrested and detained as he was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Once charged he is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate Court on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
