KZN Transport MEC leads a women in law enforcement road block at the Marianhill Toll Plaza.

As part celebrating Women’s Month, Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, MEC Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni today, 06 August, led a women in law enforcement road block at the Marianhill Toll Plaza.

This morning the MEC joined the women led multi-disciplinary roadblock. As of midday, over 500 vehicles had been stopped.

During the road block officers recovered a vehicle which was reported stolen in 2015. The focus was mainly on compliance and to ensure that road users especially, those using public transport are also adhering to the Covid-19 regulations such as wearing of face masks.

The MEC commended the efforts of women in law in trying to curb carnages on the roads and encouraged them to continue working hard.

“We have decided to celebrate Women’s Month as women in the law enforcement in this fasion. We have decided to establish this multi-disciplinary law enforcement task team in order for us to show the world and everybody that women can also do it. Women are capable.” said the MEC.

She also announced her interventions in bringing about stability within the Road Traffic Inspectorate. The directorate has been in the media for wrong reasons. As part of her interventions, the MEC has met with the RTI management to understand the challenges facing the unit. She has also directed that all vacant positions, especially in management be urgently filled. She has encouraged women to apply for senior managerial positions available within the Road Traffic Inspectorate.

“We assure that we will attend, especially my office, to all the complaints that have been laid, but have never been given attention. We are prepared to deal with all those complaints in order for our personnel to be encouraged to perform their tasks with the necessary vigour that is expected out there,” said Nkonyeni.

Finally, in trying to stabilise the Road Traffic Inspectorate women have been recommended to act in three senior critical positions that have been left vacant for a long time.
