Eighty five drunk drivers are among 950 suspects that Gauteng police arrest during weekend operations

Police in Gauteng continues to intensify weekend operations that are aimed at reducing the levels of crime and enforcing lockdown regulations. These operations have this weekend resulted in the arrest of more than 960 suspects, including 85 that were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela was joined by Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Ms. Faith Mazibuko as he led Operation O Kae Molao in Hammanskraal and Temba, Tshwane District. More than 300 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from Contravention of the Disaster Management Act, car hijacking, attempted murder, robbery, dealing in liquor without a license, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and malicious damage to property.

Meanwhile, 259 were nabbed by the police in Ekurhuleni District for crimes such as theft, murder, possession of drugs, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen goods, and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police in West Rand and Johannesburg Districts arrested 240 suspects for crimes ranging from murder, possession of drugs, Contravention of Disaster Management Act, fraud, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

More than 167 suspects were arrested in the Sedibeng District for crimes that include rape, murder, possession of suspected stolen goods, contempt of court, housebreaking, and theft.

All arrested suspects will appear before the different Magistrates’ Courts in Gauteng in due course.

Police are warning those who continue with the Contravention of Disaster Management Act, that the law will deal with them decisively. Police in Gauteng will continue to enforce the level one lockdown regulations while balancing it with crime combating.

Management of the South African Police Service in Gauteng is urging the community to continue to help the police in the fight against crime by reporting criminal activities by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111 and reporting non-compliance with lockdown regulations by calling 082 778 0409 for Johannesburg, 082 455 5061 for Ekurhuleni, 082 416 3701 for Tshwane, 082 820 5833 for Sedibeng and 082 850 8176 for West Rand.
