Bad debtor severely assaulted in Verulam

A 45-year-old male was seriously injured after he was assaulted for failing to pay back a debt of R50 000.

A member of the public contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) requesting assistance for the man who was being assaulted on Todd Street in the vicinity of the Verulam Train Station. Reaction Officers were dispatched and on arrival located a man seated in a white Hyundai Accent. He was bleeding extensively from an injury to his head.

He informed Reaction Officers that he is a plumber and in 2019 he was loaned R50 000 by an individual. In return, he was expected to complete part of a government tender that required his skills. After failing to perform the work, he promised to repay the money but failed to settle the debt.

He was at his residence in Buffeldraai, KZN when he was picked up by the man he owed the money to and two of his associates. They drove him to a cane field in Inanda where they beat him with sticks. They loaded him back in the vehicle and proceeded to the Verulam Train Station where they continued to assault him.

Reaction Officers interviewed one of the individuals responsible for the assault. He stated that after three years of pleading for his money he decided to deal with the matter in his own way. His two accomplices left prior to the arrival of First Responders.

The injured man opted not to register a criminal case until he received medical attention.
