How to get your car free from being stuck in the mud

When you get stuck in the mud with your car, you get the same feeling when trying to swim against a sea current – you seem to be getting nowhere. But there is a way out of such a situation, so read on further.1

What’s the solution?1

The only way is to arrange for a way for your car to regain traction.

Everybody must get out of the car1

Yes, everyone, so those wearing fancy shoes may have to take them off before stepping into the mud. This immediately reduces the weight of the car and will minimise any further sinking into the mud.

Stay calm1

This may be easier said than done but panicking and trying to ‘rev’ the car out of trouble will likely have the opposite effect. Once you have calmed down, pause, and assess the situation to find out the best strategy. For example, is only one wheel stuck in the mud or more or all of them? If it doesn’t look so severe, you will be able to get out soon.

Clear mud away from in front of the tyres1

Unfortunately, you will have to get muddy, but removing any mud facing all the tyres is essential. You can use your hand to do this, but a spade or something similar will be ideal. By removing the mud, you are making it easier for the car to go forward and out.

Testing time1

Ensure the wheels are straight and then slowly start to accelerate the car’s engine using second or third gear while slowly releasing the clutch. If it’s an automatic, enter it into its lowest gear.

Avoid spinning the wheels at all costs1

Spinning the wheels means you get into more trouble, as well as mud will be flying everywhere. However, just because things are not working out does not mean more power is required.

How to arrange for more traction1

If your car is down to its axles in mud, use 4 rubber mats placed directly in front of the wheels. Make sure to tuck the edge of each mat deep in front and underneath the front tyres so that they can get a grip immediately. If you don’t have mats, try a blanket or any wood or flat stones lying nearby. Slowly press on the accelerator, and if you succeed, don’t forget any blankets or mats left behind.

Release some air from your tyres1

If the previous plan did not work, release some air from the tyres to increase their surface area, and try again. Remember that when you get back to the main road, go to the nearest garage to re-inflate the tyres.

In a situation such as getting stuck in the mud, only some items such as mats may get you out of trouble, but there’s no guarantee. So why not have peace of mind knowing that your car is sufficiently covered regarding your specific needs? Are you looking for affordable car insurance?
