Post office robbery suspect arrested

A 41-year-old man was arrested at Ipopeng informal settlement on Monday, 24 January 2022 for a business robbery.

His arrest follows a robbery at a post office in Mangaung Metro on Tuesday, 04 January 2022. According to the report made by the 41-year-old complainant and the manager, the first suspect arrived at the post office at about 15:55 and purchased an A4-size envelope. She turned away from the counter as if to invite the second suspect in. The second suspect stormed into the building and grabbed the postman who was busy sweeping the floor from behind holding the firearm against his head. The first suspect ran around the counter and pointed at the teller and the complainant with a firearm. She then threatened the complainant to open the safe. The suspects helped themselves to an undisclosed amount of money and then fled the scene.

On Monday 24 January 2022 the Mangaung Metro Tactical Response Team operationalised the intelligence received by the Crime Intelligence Unit, which led to the arrest of the suspect at Ipopeng Informal Settlement. Upon searching the house, the team discovered a huge amount of money in a black plastic bag hidden in the headboard. The suspect will appear in Smithfield Magistrate Court on Wednesday 26 January 2022.
