Personal safety tips for South African motorists

The safety of South African motorists on the road is threatened daily by criminals. The good news is that we can learn from the below tips on how to improve our safety.1

How alert are we while we travel? 1

We can do several things to mitigate any risk from criminal activity. First, please be aware of your surroundings and anything that appears out of the ordinary.

What to consider before going on a trip1

You cannot afford to break down anywhere, which is why we need to do everything we can to avoid that situation. That means your car needs to be in good working order, and the fuel tank must be full. Fortunately, cars these days automatically lock the doors when travelling. However, it would be best if you kept your windows closed, especially in built-up areas.

What do I need to check when stopping or parking? 1

Never leave the car unlocked, even if you are quickly dashing in and out somewhere. Always check if your doors are locked as criminals use jamming devices. Place all valuables in the boot. Completely avoid stopping in isolated places, and park in well-lit areas, preferably near security guards.

Communication while travelling1

Avoid any communication between you and a stranger when stopping at, for instance, a traffic light. It’s better to be rude than be in danger. However, if someone is approaching your car while travelling slowly, and you feel threatened, hoot to attract attention.

When going home1

Change your route from work regularly, and always check in the rear-view mirror if anyone is following you. If you see some people near your driveway, drive on and drive past till they have gone.

What about stopping? 1

Remember, a moving car protects you from criminals. Approach any accident slowly from a distance and if it looks suspicious, turn around and go the other way. Criminals fake accidents to get you to stop your car to hijack it. For the same reason, especially at night, approach traffic lights slowly when red so that you are still moving by the time they turn green. Similarly, they may bump you from behind so that you’ll get out of your car. Make sure first if it is safe to do so.

Your life is more valuable1

If you are being hijacked, never resist. It’s not worth losing your life over stuff that can always be replaced. It is safer to be part of a lift club where several people are in the car.

How can I improve the protection of my car?

Besides the existing alarm system, securing a wheel lock and gear lock makes it harder for any thief to steal your car.

How do I handle aggressive drivers? 1

Some drivers are aggressive when they try and cut you off or drive too close to your car’s rear bumper. Ignore such behaviour, and continue to drive defensively, avoiding hooting or flashing your headlights.

Criminals can strike at any time. So besides following the above tips, remember to obtain car insurance that covers your car adequately. Are you insured against hijacking and car theft? Are you happy with your current car insurance? Contact PMD to discover more about their affordable car insurance with unique benefits if you are unsure.
