Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrested a suspect who attempted to rob the same liquor store twice within a week.
The RUSA Operations Center received a call of a Robbery in progress at Railway Liquors on Wick Street – Verulam at approx 15:41. Reaction Officers converged on the premises and an foot chase ensued. A suspect was found on a roof of a building on Madressa Lane in the CBD. He was positively identified as the suspect that attempted to rob the bottle store. A large knife was found on the scene (picture 2). Several identity cards with similar facial pictures and bank cards were found in his possession.
According to staff at the bottle store, the suspect stole items from Green Cat Bar on Saturday last week. When he returned to the building earlier today, his identity was confirmed after the staff viewed the CCTV footage of the theft. When confronted the suspect produced a knife and attempted to rob the store. During a scuffle the RUSA Operations Center received the call of the crime in progress.
The identity cards are believed to be used to unlawfully collect the R350 covid relief grant from the SA Post Office.
