Woman in labour evacuated during protest in Osindisweni

A 28-year-old woman in labor was prevented from being transported to hospital by protestors in Osindisweni, KZN.

Frustrated residents from Osindisweni, KZN blocked Oakford Road with trees after being left without water since Friday. Traffic built up for nearly a kilometer. The road services Osindisweni Hospital. Several Nurses, Doctors, and patients were unable to reach the medical facility.

A woman went into labor while seated in a taxi. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 08:57 from Police who were attending to the protest. RUSA Medics were dispatched to provide medical assistance to the female who is 8 months pregnant and began experiencing severe contractions. On arrival, the female was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

A Nurse on scene informed authorities that she was in possession of keys to a cupboard that is used to store baby formula. She was concerned that the delay would result in infants not being fed on time.

Police addressed the protestors who agreed to open the road and allow vehicles to access the hospital.
