Aliwal North to commemorate the World Remembrance Day for Traffic Victims (WDoR) 2022

The Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Walter Sisulu Local Municipality will commemorate the World Remembrance Day for Traffic Victims (WDoR) 2022 with the Candle Lighting Ceremony on N6 Mtali, Aliwal North, on 20 November 2022 at 09:00.

The multi-stakeholder effort to promote road safety programmes such as World Remembrance Day for Traffic Victims will be led by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha. MEC Nqatha will be joined by the Interfaith community to commemorate this global initiative to save lives on our roads. Currently, South Africa records just under 13 000 road fatalities per annum, which equates to about 35 people daily. WDoR 2022 puts the spotlight on the Justice for road victims.

Traffic law enforcement, thorough investigation after a crash to find out if a crime was committed and to prevent recurrence, criminal prosecution where appropriate and civil compensation are all part of the justice system. When carried out seriously, fairly and consistently, such a system is what road crash victims who have been injured or had a family member killed as the result of someone’s law–breaking or negligence deserve and wish for, since it also represents a main factor of prevention and this would mean that lessons are learnt from their tragedies so that they may not be repeated.

Through Justice in Adjudication the RTIA objectives include positively changing the behaviour of road users so that they are all safe on the road. The AARTO Act is aimed at enhancing law enforcement in municipalities by introducing a standard, equitable and fair traffic adjudication system.
