A 68-year-old woman was accosted by a lone armed suspect while conducting her afternoon prayer at her outdoor Temple in Southridge – Verulam in Kwazulu Natal.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was called out to Sew Drive by the victim’s daughter at approximately 16:52. The female provided descriptive details of a suspect that had just robbed her mother & fled on foot. A team of Reaction Officers were diverted to search for the suspect while Paramedics attended to the woman & gathered further information.
According to the elderly woman, she had just conducted a prayer indoors and walked to her temple to light a God Lamp when a man armed with a knive attacked her. He then forced her indoors and gagged and bound her with a dish cloth. A piece of rag was stuffed into her mouth. The suspect then threatened to cut off the women’s ears if her gold earings could not be removed.
The granny was then forced to lay in the bedroom and a mattress was placed over her. The victim’s daughter & grandchild were in the home and managed to remain out of sight. The suspect continued to ransack the home and fled with a mobile phone, gold earrings, a hand bag & other valuables.
When interviewed, a family living in the same building informed Reaction Officers that they were unaware of the Robbery in Progress.
