Western Cape detectives arrests duo for Thembalethu murder

Thorough investigation by Western Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes detectives (Taxi Violence Unit) into the killing of Welele Mbudede(60), a leader in the minibus taxi industry based in George, led to the arrest of two suspects on Thursday, 09 March 2023. The duo made their first court appearance in the Thembalethu Magistrates’ court on Friday, 10 March 2023, on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Investigation into the attack indicates, on Wednesday, 01 March 2023 at about 20:45 the victim and a family member were outside of their residence at Zone 6 in Thembalethu, George when two armed men appeared. The men randomly fired several rounds fatally wounding the 60 year old victim and wounding the other who sustained an injury to the leg. The victim (60) was later declared dead by paramedics on scene.

The case was postponed to 30 March 2023 for a formal bail application. The accused aged 23 and 39, both arrested in George, were remanded in custody.

This is an ongoing police probe.
