Suspect arrested for contravention of the immigration act, possession of suspected stolen property, and driving without a driving license

A 57-year-old male was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Operations officers together with the Witwatersrand University Reaction Unit for contravention of the immigration act, possession of suspected stolen property, and driving without a driving license in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

On Thursday, 20 April 2023, officers were called for backup by the Witwatersrand University Reaction Unit who had intercepted a black Volkswagen Polo at De Korte and Station Street in Braamfontein.

The vehicle was allegedly involved in theft incidents inside the Wits University campus and was sought as per the Hillbrow SAPS case.

On arrival at the scene, the officers discovered that the driver, a Ugandan national had no driving license and passport. The officers searched the vehicle and found suspected stolen property, a sound system covered with jackets in the boot that the driver could not account for.

The officers then went to the Wits University CCTV office to check the footage and to determine which days the vehicle was on the premises.

The Wits University CCTV camera manager forwarded photos of the suspect and the dates he committed theft on the premises.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Hillbrow SAPS. The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was seized and booked at the SAPS Aeroton pound.
