Tip-off leads to arrest of five suspects, precious stones and abandoned vehicle recovered

Members of SAPS Vhembe Flying Squad have arrested five suspects aged between 38 and 58 for possession of precious stones and suspected stolen property, on Tuesday, 11 April 2023 at around 20:00.

The members received information about suspects who were in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Leads were operationalised and the suspects were traced to a RDP house at Mutshepisi village. Upon searching the house, Police recovered 31 x10 kg bags of Precious stones, big and small alpha compressors.

Meanwhile, on 12 April 2023 at about 03:35, the same team seized a silver grey Mercedes Benz C220 and illicit cigarettes, following a swift reaction to the information received regarding the vehicle transporting illicit cigarettes from Willyspoort N1 to Makhado.

The said vehicle was then spotted, and police attempted to intercept the vehicle however, the driver sped off. In the process, the driver lost control of the vehicle when it came to a halt at a traffic circle. The suspect thereafter fled the scene on foot.

The members searched the vehicle and found 367 boxes of illicit cigarettes Remington Gold with an estimated street value of R36700.00

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has praised the members for arresting these suspects and recovering the stolen goods.

The arrested suspects will soon appear before the local Magistrate’s Court.

The Police investigations are still ongoing.
