Anti-Gang Unit crime prevention operations yield positive results

Anti-Gang Unit, through crime prevention operations to curb gang violence, arrested two suspects aged 34 and 24 for the possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and possession of mandrax.

On 18 May 2023, members attached to Anti-Gang Unit deployed in Steenberg area received information which led them to an address in St Cecillia Street, Steenberg where a thorough search was conducted in a Wendy House in the back yard. A 9mm Norinco Star Pistol, and seven 9mm rounds of ammunition was found hidden in the base of the bed. A 34-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and taken to Steenberg police station for detention. He will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates court once charged.

The members deployed on foot patrol in Muizenberg proceeded to a premises in Military Heights in Muizenberg where a suspected gang grouping gathered. They conducted a search and found a 24-year-old man in possession of a Llama pistol with serial number removed as well as 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and six and a half mandrax tablets. The suspect was arrested for charges of possession of a prohibited firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and mandrax. He is expected to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrates court once charged.

In an unrelated matter, members of Maitland Flying Squad followed up information in the early hours of this morning after members of the public in Harare inform them about a person who was carrying a firearm. Members pursued the information which led them to a premises where they found the suspect with the firearm in his possession. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Harare SAPS on a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Suspect will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court on Monday, 22 May 2023.
