Continued efforts to eradicate the proliferation of illegal guns in our province, were dealt another blow when members of the Anti-Gang Unit deployed in the Mitchells Plain area to curb ongoing gang violence and attend to the tracing of wanted suspects, acted on information late yesterday afternoon and confiscated two firearms with ammunition and arrested two suspects for the illegal possession thereof. Six suspects were also arrested in connection with a murder perpetrated in Manenberg, last month.
The first arrest was made in Tafelsig when members pounced on a residence in Waterfall Street where a wanted suspect attempted to flee when members accosted him. The member’s quick response ensured that the 30-year-old suspect was apprehended. Upon searching him, the members found a Glock 9mm pistol without a serial number as well as two magazines with 44 rounds of ammunition in his possession. It was established that the arrested suspect is linked to a local gang that operates in the area.
From Mitchell’s Plain, the members proceeded to Manenberg policing precinct, acting on information about a suspect that was in possession of a firearm. This information led them to an address situated in Scheldt Walk where they accosted the suspect as per their intelligence. On arrival at the premises, the members ensued with a search and found a 9mm CZ pistol and magazine with 14 rounds of ammunition that were hidden under the kitchen pantry cupboard. The 31-year-old suspect was arrested on charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
In addition, the team also arrested six suspects between the ages 22 and 49 in connection with a murder perpetrated in Manenberg, last month.
All these suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances, once charged.
Provincial management has lauded the members for their diligence and commitment to rid our streets of illegal firearms and ammunition that threaten the safety and well-being of our vulnerable communities.
