Police arrest alleged members of a taxi association for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition

Three men alleged to be members of a certain taxi association patrol squad were arrested in Centurion on Monday, 12 June 2023, for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Police from Taxi Violence Task Team received information about members of a taxi association patrol squad who were blocking Olivenhoutbosch Road in Centurion are in possession of unlicensed firearms and were blocking the road.

The team requested backup from Highway Patrol Unit and proceeded to the scene where the men were intercepted. Upon searching them, police found three pistols that were loaded with ammunition. All firearms had their serial numbers filled off. The fourth firearm was found abandoned in the nearby bushes.

The three suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear before Pretoria Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 14 June 2023.

The suspects will be profiled and the firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of any crime.

Furthermore the police in Gauteng have recovered 52 unlicensed firearms and 610 ammunition, during operations and stop and searches that were conducted during the past weekend. This is as a result of our continuing commitment to rid the streets of Gauteng of illegal firearms.
