Review of the New Toyota Urban Cruiser for Sale in South Africa in 2023

Toyota South Africa launched the new Toyota Urban Cruiser in January 2023. The SUV was born out of a worldwide alliance between Suzuki and Toyota. Enjoy the review as you read on further.1

Some features of the new Urban Cruiser

The Urban Cruiser is larger than its predecessor, being 4,365 mm long, and having a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The interior is more spacious than the previous model, with adequate leg room for rear passengers. The large boot has a capacity of 353 litres. 1

How does the crossover’s exterior look?

New changes across the Urban Cruiser range include narrow LED daytime running lights with bi-halogen headlights beneath them. LED taillights complete the picture. The entry-level XS model has 17-inch steel wheels, but XR models boast of 17-inch alloy wheels. 1

Which models are available in South Africa?

The XS, XR and XR AT models all have a friendly-to-use, 7-inch information touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. A high-quality, integrated reverse camera makes reversing a pleasure. 1

Some features of the XS model

This model has keyless entry and a push button start, dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, and automatic climate control. ABS brakes with EBD, vehicle stability control, hill assist control, and ISOFIX anchors at the SUV’s rear make up the rest. 1

What about the XR model?

These models enjoy additional benefits such as two extra speakers besides the existing two, cruise control, side and curtain airbags totalling six, and black roof rails. You can also specify a two-tone paint scheme for your SUV. 1

How’s the engine?

Only one engine is available across the entire range. Suzuki’s well-established naturally aspirated, 1.5-litre petrol engine generates 77 kW power and 138 Nm torque for the front wheels. Either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission is available. 1

The Urban Cruiser’s performance

According to a test driver, the 5-speed manual model was the best choice, with the engine and transmission pairing well. The test driver would have preferred an extra sixth gear to lower the high revs experienced during highway driving. Seeing the test drive took place along the coast, one must remember that the Gauteng altitude could lower the engine’s power by about 17%.1

How does the SUV drive?

It’s most comfortable to drive, and any rough spots on the road are barely noticeable, whilst noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels are negligible. 1

What’s the cost?

The Toyota Urban Cruiser XS MT comes at R329 400, while the Urban Cruiser XR MT costs R347 400. 1
