High-density Operation Shanela (Kukula) in Limpopo province gaining momentum

Operation Shanela in Limpopo gains momentum as crime combating and high-density operations proved to be successful with 1 693 suspects arrested on various including murder, attempted murder, robberies, rape, sexual assault, assaults, fraud and burglaries.

These successful intelligence-driven and high-density operations were conducted simultaneously across the Limpopo Province from Monday, 14 August 2023 to Sunday 20 August 2023. The operation is aimed at disrupting criminal activities before and during the weekend which usually threatens the safety of the communities within the Province.

The high-density integrated operations comprised of various units such as Vispol, Detectives, Crime Intelligence, POP, K9 Unit other Law Enforcement Agencies, Provincial and Municipal Traffic Departments, Private Security Companies and Community based crime structures, Community Policing Forum (CPF), Youth Crime Prevention Desk and Community in Blue Patrollers.

Operations targeted illegal liquor outlets, suspected drug outlets and compliance inspections carried out of licensed liquor outlets.

During the operations police members have confiscated nine firearms, 110 various assorted rounds of ammunition and 33 knives. Police also confiscated 125 961 counterfeit cigarette sticks, 39 dangerous weapons, 155 326,48 grams of dagga, 3461grams of crystal meth and 3004 grams of nyaope and 687 117 liquor.

In addition, 25 suspects were nabbed for other serious crimes, 166 for drug related Crimes, 10 for possession of firearm with ammunition, 26 for Domestic Violence Act, related and 383 undocumented persons.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the results achieved during these operations and praises the members for being committed in their mandates to protect the citizens of the this Province.

Some of the arrested suspects have already appeared at their local Magistrate’s court facing various offences.
