As part of marking one year in office (365 days), the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, together with the leadership of eThekwini Municipality, will tomorrow, Monday 14 August 2023, preside over the re-opening of main road R603 in Adams Mission in eThekwini.
R603 known as Mbumbulu Road collapsed during the December 2021 floods and one section had to be closed completely.
This road is strategic in linking the areas of Amanzimtoti, iLlovu, Adams Mission, Mbumbulu, Mid-Illovo and Pietermaritzburg.
This road is also an alternative to the N3, which regularly experiences heavy congestions due to the upgrades and construction work that is currently taking place.
The re-construction of the damaged section of R603 was amongst the first projects that MEC Hlomuka attended in his first few days in the Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison.
Commenting on his first 365 days in office and the re-opening of R603, Hlomuka said that this is not the government of promises but government of action.
“When we reflect of the first one year in office, we are excited with the level of speed at which we have delivered services to our people. We have touched so many lives in many corners. We have delivered and accelerated the pace of rendering services, however, there is still more to be done. In the next remaining months, we will continue to deliver strategic infrastructure, improve public transport services, empower emerging entrepreneurs and most importantly, through S’thesha Waya Waya, we will create more permanent jobs. Regarding R603, we particularly excited because it is one of the few projects we launched, and it is good that the people who are using this road will ones again be able to access it. The past year, we have been active in restoring mobility in all flood affected projects,” said Hlomuka.
